Wrightsville Beach red-flag surfing issue still not resolved Wrightsville Beach red-flag surfing issue still not resolved

Wrightsville Beach | Surfers will have to wait two more weeks to find out if their access to the water will be limited during red-flag conditions at Wrightsville Beach.

The town's Water Safety Committee recommended Thursday night that the Board of Aldermen maintain the existing policy, which allows surfers to go anywhere in the water when red flags are posted.

But the board took no action. Instead, the issue will be on the May 22 meeting agenda for discussion.

The issue has been whether surfing should be allowed in all areas during red-flag conditions, which is when waters are rough and currents are strong. Under the existing ordinance, surfing is permitted in certain zones while lifeguards are on duty to prevent conflicts between surfers and swimmers. But under red-flag conditions, surfers have full access to the water.

With additions that allow police officers to monitor the sound in town with sound meters, call for private parties of 50 and more to hire an off-duty Beaufort police officer and limit outdoor entertainment permits to four per household, per calendar year, the board agreed it was worth giving the new ordinance a test run.
